Dome of The Rock, Interior, Mosque of Omar

Image by Oregon State University Archives
Image Title: Dome of The Rock, Interior, Mosque of Omar
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "This rock has been regarded as sacred from the earliest times. Long before the Hebrew occupation of Palestine, this striking formation led the ancients to view this as a Holy mount. Its length is about 58 feet, the breadth nearly 52 feet. It extends above the surrounding pavement from four to six and half feet. Here on Mount Moriah, which is called also Zion, Abraham was about to offer Isaac. Here by the threshing-floor of Araunsh, David saw the destroying angel. Here also Solomen built the temple, but this rock was not within it as it is within the Mosque. It is probable that the altar of sacrifice stood on the rock.
The interior of the Mosque, which is an octagon with sides 66 feet 7 inches in length, is 174 feet in diameter. It is divided by its two series of supports into three concentric parts. The pillars were all taken from older buildings. An inscription in the oldest Arabic character, Cufic, records that "Adballah el-Iman el-Melik, prince of the faithful erected this dome in the year 72-692 A.D.["] It is in the Arabian style."

Gesang School (i.e. kisaeng school)

Type: Postcards/Ephemera

Their social position was among the lowest in the traditional Korean class system. Their daughters also became kisaengs and their sons became slaves. The art of entertaining of the kisaeng is analogous to Japanese geisha. These professional entertainers were highly trained in the arts of poetry, music, dance, and other forms of social or artistic diversion. The picture is somewhat curious. Scene in Amiens near the Cathedral

Image by National Library of Scotland
A street in Amiens, France. A number of the buildings have been badly damaged by bombing or shelling. In fact one of the buildings on the right has been completely destroyed. There are mounds of rubble on both sides of the street. At the end of the street Amiens Cathedral is visible, remarkably untouched by bombing or shellfire.
A lot of French architecture and land was devastated by prolonged warfare, as scenes like this typify. It took many years for the re-building to be completed. After a brief occupation by the Germans, in 1914, Amiens remained in French hands for the duration of the war.

On Sunday October 13th 1918 a thanksgiving service in the Cambrai Cathedral for the deliverance of the Town

Image by National Library of Scotland
Thanksgiving service in the Cambrai Cathedral for the deliverance of the Town. Troops at prayer in Cambrai Cathedral, France, during World War I. Allied troops kneeling at prayer in Cambrai Cathedral. The abb, or abbot, and his fellow churchmen are kneeling in the front row: their black vestments blend into the dark wood round the altar, making them more difficult to spot. The altar seems largely unscathed by the shelling that was inflicted on Cambrai, but the broken chairs in the foreground of the photograph indicate that other parts of the cathedral were affected.
Cambrai was delivered from German occupation by the Allies after several days of fierce fighting that began on October 8th 1918.
[Original reads: 'On Sunday October 13th 1918, the abbe THUILLIEZ of Cambrai who stayed with a sick woman although threatened to be shot if he did so, held a thanksgiving service in the Cambrai Cathedral for the deliverance of the Town. Also prayers were offered for those who fell during the taking of the town. Civilians who remained in the town cellars and who came out when the Canadians entered are seen in front row left of photograph.']

Spinning Cotton

Image by Oregon State University Archives
Image Title: Spinning Cotton
Image Description from historic lecture booklet: "Cotton is not a native plant in Japan either. It is said that by chance some seeds were brought from India in the year 799 A.D. and being planted they grew well. Then the people learned, from the Chinese, again, how to clean, spin, and weave and thus another useful fabric was added to their wardrobes. the cotton spinning and weaving industries area now very important occupations in Japan. However, the native supply of the raw material is nothing like sufficient; therefore great quantities are brought from abroad, China, India, Egypt, and even the United States. But the Quantity of yarn and cloth produced is greater than is needed at home; consequently exporting these goods to the continent of Asia is one of Japan’s most profitable trades.
Japan’s cotton mills increased nearly 300 percent during the world war. The earthquake of 1923 gave the industry a set back but it has practically recovered from that and is today using nearly two million bales of cotton annually, three-tenths of which was shipped from America. In 1924 Japan exported manufactured cotton good to the amount of 150 million dollars."

Few of the American nurses in France

Image by National Library of Scotland
Nurses, stretching from one side of the photograph to the other, are milling around in front of the camera. They are all wearing long white dresses and neat square caps with their hair tied back except for two of the women who are entirely in black. It is sunny and so some of the women are squinting. They are all smiling and look relaxed. They are not all facing the camera though and they are not placed in formation suggesting that this is not a formal photograph.
Nursing was one of the few occupations which allowed women access to the Front. It was also the only occupation which enabled women during this period to travel around different areas out with Great Britain.

Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig with H.R.H. Prince Yurihiti of Higashi Fushimi

Image by National Library of Scotland
Prince Higashifushimi Yorihito (1867-1922) with General Douglas Haig, beside a general staff car near the Western Front. Born in Kyoto, Prince Yorihito was the seventeenth son of the Higashi-Fushimi royal dynasty, and succeeded as second head of the House of Fushimi-no-miya in February 1903. Sir Douglas Haig is the gentleman welcoming the Prince.
As part of its growing power, influence and confidence, Japan was the first non-white nation to form a full alliance with Britain in 1902. The terms of this alliance allowed Japan to declare war on Germany on 23 August 1914. Aside from its activities in Manchuria and China, plus its occupation of some German-held Pacific islands, most of Japan’s wartime operations were performed by the nation’s powerful navy.
